Importance of Rehab
Rehabilitation following ACL reconstruction is crucial for proper recovery to return to everyday activities, sports, and exercise without pain or limitations. While an ACL reconstruction creates a new ACL to support your knee, the ACL tendon graft is very weak in the beginning stages of rehabilitation. Significant muscle atrophy, or wasting away with associated muscle weakness, is also especially common in the quadriceps muscle that controls extension of the knee.
In order for your body to get used to your new ACL and for your muscles to activate properly and regain strength, you will require several months of carefully monitored rehabilitation to progress through different exercises and movements. Without proper rehabilitation completed in entirety from start to finish, you are at a significant increase for chronic knee pain, instability, loss of motion and strength, and risk of re-injury.
