HISTORY
Lakewood, California was incorporated in 1954 and is often recognized as one of the first master planned suburban communities in the United States. Built on former agricultural land, including lima bean fields, Lakewood was developed rapidly after World War II to meet the growing demand for housing. Its name comes from the area’s natural lakes and wooded surroundings that once defined the landscape. Lakewood also became known for the “Lakewood Plan,” a model of contract city governance that allowed it to efficiently provide services through Los Angeles County, influencing other cities across California.
