HISTORY
Torrance, California was founded in 1912 by real estate developer Jared Sidney Torrance, who envisioned a planned industrial and residential community south of Los Angeles. The city was designed with wide streets, zoning separation, and modern infrastructure, making it one of the earliest examples of a master planned city in Southern California. Torrance grew steadily through the 20th century with the expansion of manufacturing, oil production, and later the automotive industry, including major Japanese companies.
