Santa Monica, CA is a coastal city in California with roots dating back to 1769, when Spanish explorers first passed through the area during the Portolá expedition. The city was officially founded in 1875 and quickly developed as a seaside resort destination. The name “Santa Monica” is believed to have been inspired by Saint Monica, with early settlers referencing the area’s natural springs as reminiscent of her tears. By the early 20th century, the arrival of rail lines helped transform Santa Monica into a popular getaway for Los Angeles residents. According to the City of Santa Monica, the iconic Santa Monica Pier, opened in 1909, became one of the most recognizable landmarks in CA and remains a major attraction today.
